Chapter 19

Joey held it together in the back of the Uber until the driver pulled up to her front door. The entire ride she sat in the backseat of the white Nissan in a daze. Unquestionably, she’d been caught off guard to learn Jamal was Eve's cousin. Instead of following her first mind and cutting her losses and leaving, Joey had stayed to pitch her men’s line.

Never one to quit at anything, Joey was determined to see this thing through. It would have been one thing if Jamal hadn’t cared for the products. That would’ve been fine. But he had to go and make her feel less than. Sitting across from her all smug and disinterested looking. When he criticized the first product, he knocked the wind out of her sails. And Joey knew at that point there was no use in her presenting the aftershave and beard oil. For what? The great Mr. Jamal Peters didn’t think her products were good enough for his well to do and wealthy clientele.

“We’re here,” the young lady driver said to Joey, pulling her out of her musing.

“Thanks.” Joey gathered her case and exited the vehicle. Before she could make it up the walkway, Tracy had opened the door, a cheesy grin plastered on her face.

“How’d it go?”

Those three words caused Joey to burst into tears.

Tracy charged out the door and ran to meet her friend. “What happened?”

The question only made Joey cry harder.

“Oh, gosh...come on, Joey.”

Tracy took the case from Joey and led her upstairs to the living quarters. Joey flopped down on the sofa and bent over at the waist. Her body rocked as she sobbed.

“I worked so hard...”

Easing down beside her, Tracy soothingly rubbed Joey’s back. “I know, honey...what happened?”

“He didn’t like it.”

Tracy put her free hand on her hip. “You mean none of them? That punk didn’t like not one of them?”

Joey sat upright and grabbed the tissue box off the end table. She shook her head and blew her nose at the same time. “I didn’t even get to let them test the aftershave and beard oil.”

“Why not?” Tracy demanded.

Drawing in a shaky breath, Joey filled Tracy in on the details of the disastrous lunch.

“Did Eve like the men's line?”

Joey nodded. “Yeah, she did.”

“Does she have any pull? I mean, I know it’s her cousin’s company.” Tracy flipped the waist-length braids she spent two days installing over her shoulder. “By the way...who is her cousin?”

Closing her eyes, Joey whispered, “Jamal Peters.”

“Come again, girlfriend.”

“You heard what I said,” Joey whined.

Tracy shifted her body so that she was facing Joey. “Turn around and look at me, Joey.”

When she did, Tracy snatched a tissue out of the box nestled on Joey’s lap. Dabbing at Joey’s eyes, Tracy spoke calmly. “You know what?”

Joey shook her head.

“You don’t need no damn Top Hats Day Spas.”

Joey nodded.

“You know why?”

“No,” Joey squeaked out.

“Because you’re a boss...making boss moves. When is Community Day?”

“Saturday.”

Next Saturday, the first of May was the spring kick off of Community Day
